The Bureau of Land Management Alaska Fire Service is responsible for wildland
fire management on all Department of Interior and Native corporation lands and
on most military land in Alaska. Under an interagency agreement, AFS provides
wildfire protection on all lands -- 194 million acres -- in the northern part
of the state. The State of Alaska Division of Forestry manages fires on 150
million acres in the southern part. The U.S. Forest Service manages fires in
national forests. Fire management is conducted under coordinated interagency
fire management plans. These plans call for a wide range of options, ranging
from all-out aggressive initial attack to monitoring fires burning on lands
where resource values do not warrant suppression expenditures.
