Summary
The NERC Mesosphere Stratosphere Troposphere (MST) Radar facility is situated at Capel Dewi, five miles outside Aberystwyth in Ceredigion, Wales. Its development and operation is a joint project between the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the Physics Department of the ... University of Wales at Aberystwyth. It provides high resolution measurements of the horizontal and vertical wind velocities in the atmosphere in the regions of 2-25 km and 75-85 km. The height resolution of the radar is a multiple of 150 metres (i.e. 150 m is the finest resolution but it is an adjustable parameter). The wind data at the BADC are averaged over 12 minute periods. For further information about the instrument, see the BADC help file. The radar is designed to probe and monitor small-scale movements in the atmosphere such as winds, the jet-stream, turbulence and gravity waves. This is achieved by analysis of the changes in frequency observed in the echoes received from small, moving discontinuities in the atmosphere. The radar is computer controlled and facilities exist for processing all the radar signals received from the different height regions in near real-time. In addition to the derived wind components, lower level products such as the Doppler spectra and time-series of the returned signal strength are also available. The BADC also holds High resolution radiosonde data from the station at Aperporth, which is used by the radar team as correlative data. http://badc.nerc.ac.uk/home/index.html Link to the MST data set home page: http://www.badc.rl.ac.uk/data/mst/ [Summary Extracted from the BADC Home Page]

Access Constraints
The BADC holds the MST radar data online. These data can be retrieved by anonymous FTP or through this Worldwide Web interface. The MST data are held at the BADC in the original binary data format, in which the data are encoded into integer arrays. The simplicity of ... the data format allows the data to be read on a wide variety of computer platforms with only very minor changes to the access routines. A guide is available to help you retrieving the data. A display of the latest images is available in the image archive directory. Some examples of plots of the MST radar products can also be quickly viewed.
