Abstract:
This data set has been originally created at GRID- Geneva for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna. It was last updated in December 2000 and its status is 31 December 1999. The IAEA has been collecting operating experience data for nuclear power plants in the IAEA Member States since 1970. In 1980, the data were computerized into the Power Reactor Information System, or PRIS. ... Since then, PRIS has been kept continuously updated and improved, such that it now constitutes the most complete data bank on nuclear power reactors in the world. It is being used widely and constitutes an essential source of nuclear power information for many concerned parties.
The GRID/IAEA Nuclear Power Sites data set is not a duplication of the PRIS system, but a global geo- referenced database created with the GIS software ARC/INFO. It is meant to be used principally for locating nuclear power sites on a global scale, and it contains not only the geographical coordinates but also much useful thematic information on attributes such as country, site name, type of reactor, status of rector, capacity and number of reactors per site.
Explanation of the Data Processing done by GRID
At the end of 1999, 249 nuclear power sites were distributed throughout the world, including a total of 563 reactors. Among the reactors, 436 were active, 35 under construction and 92 in a shut down state. The data set consists of an ARC/INFO point coverage in geographic coordinates stored in decimal degrees of latitude/longitude, representing the nuclear power sites of the world with a series of thematic attributes and an INFO file holding attributes concerning the nuclear power reactors. The locations of the nuclear sites are based mainly on IAEA PRIS, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and various other Internet sources. They were verified before being digitized at GRID-Geneva.

In the item STATUS, 'A' represents active reactors, 'C' reactors under construction and 'S' shut down reactors.

In addition, the Nuclear Power Sites data set is distributed as a paper map or poster called "NUCLEAR POWER SITES AND STATUS OF REACTORS (OPERATING, UNDER CONSTRUCTION OR SHUT DOWN)" Status as of 31 December 1999.
This poster is composed of a map of the world showing the distribution of the nuclear power sites, surrounded by ten enlarged areas covering: Europe, the United States and Canada, Puerto Rico, India and Pakistan, China, Korea and Japan, Argentina and Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Iran, Russia and five graphs.
For each site, information such as name of the site, reactor type, reactor status and reactor number can be read on the maps. Number of reactors per country, reactor proportion status per country, types of reactors used in the world, and net capacity of active reactors can be read on the graphs.
