Abstract:
The Magsat project was a joint NASA/USGS effort to measure near-earth magnetic fields on a global basis. Objectives included obtaining an accurate description of the earth's magnetic field, obtaining data for use in the update and refinement of world and regional magnetic charts, compilation of a global crustal magnetic anomaly map, and interpretation of that map in terms of geologic/geophysical ... models of the earth's crust. The spacecraft was launched into a low, near-polar, orbit by the Scout vehicle.
There are two magnetometers onboard the spacecraft: a scalar magnetometer and a tri-axial fluxgate magnetometer. Both magnetometers have a resolution of less than 1.0 nT.
Data sets archived at NSSDC include digital data in both s/c coordinates and North, East, Vertical Coordinate system. Orbit data are included. Plots for some data and anomaly maps are also available. Some software is also archived, including routines from the Magsat project and a package of routines from Purdue Univ., which were used to study magnetic anomalies.
The following is a detailed list of data sets, please refer to the NSSDC Master Catalog (accessible also from NODIS menu) for more detailed information about each data set.
