Abstract:
This database consists of daily weather conditions from the New England states
and New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania from 1623 to the early 1900s. Data
were obtained from diaries, journals, agricultural records, marine logs, annals
and phenological data. Users will be able to develop time series of specific
climatic phenomena (i.e., historical climatology).
This study will develop daily
... weather conditions for New England over the past
300+ years by compiling and analyzing these written records, and by
reconstructing daily weather maps for specific years to compare with more
recent climatic conditions. New England probably has the greatest number of
lengthy archives in the United States to develop this type of record. Also, New
England occupies a sensitive area to changing climatic conditions given the
importance of storm tracks and upper-air patterns on daily to annual conditions
in the region and given how the impact of features such as the Canadian (Hudson
Bay) High, Icelandic Low and Bermuda-Azores High can vary from year-to-year.
