Sea Ice Mass Balance in the Antarctic - Mammals and Birds
Entry ID:
SIMBA_Mammals_and_Birds
Summary
Abstract:
The data set contains systematic surveys of the relative abundance and distribution of whales, dolphins, and seals throughout the SIMBA expedition. Additionally, detailed observations of the breeding biology of crab eater, Ross, and leopard seals were also recorded. Leg phase of SIMBA expedition vs. animal species is included. Data includes information such as the summary of marine mammal and seabird observation phases during SIMBA Expedition: 1 September through 31 October 2007. Mappings of the drift of the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer with Ice Station Belgica from 27 September through 24 October 2007, and the transit and drift of the RVIB Nathaniel B. Palmer between 1 September and 31 October 2007 is included.
Purpose: This research provides substantial new information on the reproductive biology, foraging ecology, habitat requirements and use, migratory patterns, disease and pathology and medicine, and population and immunogenetics of the four ice-associated phocid pinnipeds (crab eater, Ross, leopard, and Weddell seals). The data was the first to accumulate species in the BeAR sea ice mass massif (i.e., ... ![]()
