Abstract:
The Cartographic Data Visualizer (CDV) was written as example software to
demonstrate the utility of object based graphics programming languages, for
cartographic visualization, and visualization techniques that might be useful
for exploratory spatial data analysis.
The idea was to produce a dynamic graphic front end to an area of interest, to
be visually impressive and fast in response without
... having to have all of the
GIS baggage in the background before you could see anything. The idea is to
create a data set in a GIS and then use 'cdv' to visually explore it.
Digital maps tended to replicate traditional cartography. Here we wanted to
push the emphasis toward extremely transient dynamic maps that responded to the
user to provide very specific views that acted as tools for investigation.
The software was developed to be useful in communicating ideas at conferences
and presentations and as a tool for both research and teaching.
