Summary PASSCAL (Program for the Array Seismic Studies of the Continental Lithosphere) provides software to aid in the field processing of seismic data collected from RefTek data recorders. The software suite comes free to all users but has no guarantees implied. It is used primarily for data collection and quality control on Sun Workstations running Solaris 2.5.x and 2.6, ... but will also compile under Sun OS 4.1.X and Linux.
The PASSCAL software suite consists two types of programs: stand-alone programs, and programs that interface with the PostgreSQL database management system to provide a powerful tool for managing and archiving broadband data. It is not necessary to install PostgreSQL in order run the PASSCAL stand-alone programs, but if you plan to build a PASSCAL database, you will need to install PostgreSQL from the PASSCAL ftp site (&ftp://ftp.passcal.nmt.edu/passcal&). If one installs the PASSCAL suite as a package, PostgreSQL can be installed at any time. If one chooses to compile the PASSCAL source code, PostgreSQL needs to be installed first in order to use the database programs.
PostgreSQL is a freeware SQL-based object-relational database management system produced and maintained by the PostgreSQL developers' group. This enhancement of the original Postgres DBMS developed by the Database Research group at the University of California at Berkeley.
The current PASSCAL Database (PDB) is a powerful organizing/formatting tool for persons conducting broadband experiments. The PASSCAL database currently uses the PostgresSQL Version 6.2.1 and object-relation DBMS that incorporates SQL.
PDB provides the PASSCAL experimentor with a set of utilities to organize the data of their experiment and construct SEED and DataScope products for archiving and further analysis, respectively. The PDB package provides a single graphically driven frontend, pdbtools, to all of the command line driven utilities in the PASSCAL software package.
