UMAC Team Express Crop and Range Alert System
Entry ID: TeamEX
Abstract: The UMAC Team Express Crop and Range Alert System is focused on the timely
delivery of NASA satellite and aerial imagery to farmers and ranchers
living in remote areas of the Upper Midwest, land managers from the Native
American Community, and Federal and State Agencies.
The goal of UMAC's Crop and Range Alert System project is to promote the use of
geospatial technologies in the Upper Midwest, ... thereby improving economic
competitiveness in our region while at the same time allowing us to benefit
To help you to apply geospatial technology to farming and ranching, we are
striving to accomplish the following:
-provide you with near real time imagery,
-develop applications for you to use that show economic advantages,
-provide you with training in the use of imagery and supporting
geospatial data and tools.
Near real time imagery and derived products from AVHRR, MODIS, Landsat, IKONOS,
QuickBird, Hyperion and aerial platforms are delivered to farmers, ranchers,
and land managers from the Native American Community, government agencies and
non-governmental organizations. During the summer of 2002 alone, over one
hundred Landsat scenes were acquired and processed for use by end users. As a
part of this project, over fifty end users in remote locations are provided
with a DirecPC system to connect via high bandwidth satellite link to a central
distribution system at the University of North Dakota. This helps faster
downloads of high volume data.
Precision farming applications developed include zoning for variable rate
applications, verifying effectiveness of variable rate applications and
fungicide trials, detection of anomalies related to crop stress, and other
specialized, location specific applications. Ranching applications include
forage assessment to aid decisions on stocking rate and purchase/harvest of
feed for winter months, mapping weeds etc.
