Abstract: This dataset represents spatial aggregates of 13/14 or 6 tiles of the MODIS/Terra Vegetation Indices 16-Day L3 Global 250m ISIN Grid (MOD13Q1), as provided by the EROS Data Center (EDC). Only the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) layer and its associated quality layer have been aggregated at this time. This product is available for multiple days.
The University of New Hampshire's ... (UNH) Earth Science Information Partner (ESIP), EOS-WEBSTER (http://eos-earthdata.sr.unh.edu/), has created this MODIS NDVI aggregate product from MOD13Q1 Daily VI tiles. MOD13Q1 data are provided every 16 days as a gridded level-3 product in the Integerized Sinusoidal projection. UNH has aggregated multiple tiles to create a large-region NDVI product, which can be spatially subset within the EOS-WEBSTER Search & Retrieve data ordering tool. Our system has also reprojected these data from the original Integerized Sinusoidal projection to Geographic, with a pixel resolution of 8.1 arc seconds.
The NDVI aggregate product contains only two of the original 11 layers from the input products, plus an additional layer created by EOS- WEBSTER, which provides a look-up code to map each pixel in the aggregate back to its original input tile.
These aggregate products allow the users of EOS-WEBSTER to subset MODIS NDVI data across tile boundaries and to customize the spatial region of interest using an on-line GUI interface. Data are also provided in a generic binary format (BSQ) with detailed header information, which can be read into most image or data processing applications. This product is broken into 2 logical holdings so that a user may order 1 or both of the band sets (holdings). The layers for this product are: 1) 16-day NDVI composite and 2) NDVI Quality.

The MODIS Vegetation Indices (VI) are robust spectral measures of the amount of vegetation present on the ground. They involve transformations of the red (620-670 nanometers), near-infrared (841-876 nanometers), and blue (459-479 nanometers) bands designed to enhance the "vegetation signal" and allow for precise inter-comparisons of spatial and temporal variations in terrestrial photosynthetic activity. The VI products contain two indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and a new Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI). Each MOD13Q1 product includes VI quality information in addition to composited surface reflectance bands 1-3 and 7 (i.e., the red, NIR, blue, and MIR bands [2105-2155 nanometers]). The NDVI output represents a "continuity index" to NOAA's existing AVHRR-derived NDVI. The EVI is MODIS-specific and offers improved sensitivity in high biomass regions and improved vegetation monitoring through a de-coupling of the canopy background signal and a reduction in atmospheric influences. A new compositing scheme is utilized, which reduces angular, Sun-target-sensor variations, using the Constrained View Maximum Value Composite (CV-MVC) and an option to use BRDF models. The two VIs complement each other in vegetation studies and improve upon the extraction of canopy biophysical parameters.
