Response of Crops to Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE)Entry ID: USDA0532
Abstract: "Response of Crops to Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE)" is
research that continues large cooperative experiments to
determine the effects of CO2 supplied to the free air in an open
agricultural field on crop growth, physiology, water use, soil
soil nitrogen transformations, and soil carbon sequestering.
Devoid of walls, the FACE approach produces conditions as
representative of future fields as it ... is possible to create them
today. Three prior FACE experiments determined the response of
cotton to elevated CO2 at ample and limited supplies of water.
Two subsequent experiments similarly determined the response of
wheat to elevated CO2 also at ample and limited water, and then
two additional experiments at ample and limited soil nitrogen.
The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of
elevated CO2 concentrations on the growth, yield, physiological
processes, water uses, and carbon storage of agricultural crops,
Collection Organization: USDA Agricultural Research Service,
University of Arizone, and others.
Collection Methodology: Crops, including wheat grown in a
conventional field and subjected to a free-air CO2 enrichment.
The CO2 released from a computer-controlled array of vertical
vent pipes at a specified concentration. Numerous measurements
made by cooperating scientists to document the response of the
cotton to elevated CO2. Planned measurements include above and
below ground growth; yield; flower numbers; tissue carbohydrate,
C, , and other elemental content; evapotranspiration;
photosynthesis and respiration; foliage temperature and
reflectance; leaf water potential; weather paramenters; and Soil
Collection Frequency: Ongoing research.
