A number of biologists have collected terrestrial invertebrates on Macquarie Island in previous years. Of these, K. Watson spent a year collecting intensively from various parts of the island both by hand and by extracting soil and litter samples in Tullgren funnels. He distributed the material he collected to taxonomists and published a summary of their ... findings in 1967. As a consequence, the fauna is relatively well known for a sub-antarctic island of its size. Since 1967 there have been few publications on the invertebrates; two on mites and one on Collembola. Macquarie Island speices have also been included in some general taxonomic revisions.
The Collembola, to which most attention was given during the recent field trip, are normally dominant, both in numbers of species and individuals on subantarctic islands, being outnumbered only by the Acari. They are detritivores and hence members of the decomposer suite of organisms. Since other decomposers such as myriapods, isopods, amphipods and some insect larvae are absent from Macquarie Island, the Collembola must be making a significantly larger contribution to nutrient cycling here than in less severe climates.
Field work was carried out for two months from December 7th 1986 until January 29th 1987.

Quality The main qualititative method used for collecting invertebrates was by extraction in Tullgren funnels and just over 100 samples of leaf litter, soil, moss, dung and other substrates were extracted in the six large and 10 small funnels that were taken to the island. Extraction in four Winklers and some floatation was also carried out. All these extractions were performed on the island. The ... average size of samples was 2-4 litres. Attempts were made to collect from all plant communities represented and although most samples were taken from the norhtern quarter of the island, three visits were made to field huts further south to obtain samples that were extracted at base camp. Samples from localities in the extreme south of the island were obtained from other expeditioners. Hand collections were made by beating and sweeping the vegetation and searching under stones. Some habitats sampled for the first time were interstitial meiofauna from intertidal sand, seal scats, fern litter, Acaena seed heads, deep soil and the greenhouse.
Additionally, four sites were chosen as typical of the main vegetation types on the island. These were slopes with either 1) tall tussock grassland (Poa foliosa), or 2) Stilbocarpa polaris, and plateau with either 3) herbfield or 4) fellfield with strips of moss, turf or Azorella selago. A replicate of each of these four types of land unit was selected at some distance from the original site. All eight sites were sampled quantitatively using 16 soil cores 5cms in diameter each, which were extracted until dry in banks of small Tullgren funnels. This took about 10 days. Five pitfall traps of 1.8cms in diameter filled with alcohol were run for five days on each site. Samples of litter and deep soil from and under the dominant plants were extracted non-quantitatively in large Tullgren funnels.
