Relationship between irradiance and photosynthesis at primary production sites, Antarctic, GLOBEC

Summary
Abstract: Water samples, drawn from CTD rosette bottle casts, were used for
primary production experiments to construct light-saturation curves
for the local phytoplankton assemblages, Apr-Jun 2001. These curves
relate the photosynthesis per unit chlorophyll to the irradiance.
Based on values extracted from the light-saturation curves, the
maximum rate of photosynthesis (at a given incubation temperature and
light-limiting conditions) and the irradiance level at this max rate
are reported. The general sampling area includes: the continental
shelf to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula extending from the
northern tip of Adelaide Island to the southern portion of Alexander
Island, and Marguerite Bay.
