Abstract: "Ecological Feedbacks to Climate Change: Scaling to the Landscape Level"
augments knowledge of climate/ecosystem feedback mechanisms, focusing on the
potential for climate warming to increase the biologically driven net flux of
green house gases to the atmosphere and to change vegetation communities in
such a way as to alter surface albedo. The purpose of these data is to enhance
understanding of ... how montane meadow ecosystems will respond to climate warming
and of how to scale up such responses from the level of experimental plots to
the landscape level.

Collection Methodology: We are artificially heating experimental plots in a
subalpine meadow with overhead electric radiators designed to continuously
mimic the model-predicted "Greenhouse" effect. Each plot contains habitat
ranging from a mixed shrub-steppe and grassland vegetational community along a
semi-arid ridge down to a moist swale containing a diverse assemblage of forbs.
We monitor soil temperature and moisture (every two hours at 5, 15, and 25cm
depths), floral productivity, phenology, and diversity, changes in net carbon
storage above and below ground, soil mesofaunal biomass and species diversity,
methane consumption rates, nitrogen pool sizes and turnover rates and plant
