Abstract: The "Storage and Retrieval of U.S. Waterways Parametric Data
(STORET)" was developed as a uniform data collection and
reporting system for chemical, physical, and biological water
quality data in the United States, its territories, and parts of
Canada. STORET stores, retrieves, and analyzes data (including
trends) for both surface water (including effluent) and ground
water, and is particularly ... useful for areas near discharge
sources. It can be used for improving water quality data
analysis, and for solving specific problems such as finding out
the causes and effects of water pollution, measuring compliance
with water quality standards, checking the status of waste
treatment plant needs, and determining pollution trends.
The majority of the data contained in STORET is from non-EPA
sources, including states and other federal agencies (e.g.,
U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S.
Forest Service, Bureau of Reclamation, and the Tennessee Valley
STORET contains information on sampling sites, date of samples,
and physical, chemical, and biological sample data. Geographic
coverage includes the United States and its territories and
portions of Canada. Time covered is 1950s-present (some data
from 1910s). The system contains over 180 million water sample
analyses from 800,000 stations.
Data may be obtained either by direct access through the EPA
National Computer Center IBM-3090 computer, or by requesting
data via a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Contact
the data center for details.
The primary components of STORET are:
Biological System (BIOS)
Water Quality System (WQS)
Daily Flow System (DFS)
Fish Kill File
BIOS contains biological data on aquatic organisms, including
distribution, abundance, physical condition, and habitat
descriptions. BIOS can incorporate statistical methodologies
for biological analysis.
WQS contains physical and chemical monitoring data. Included
are site information, sampling methodology, location
information, parameters tested, and test results, as well as
ambient water quality and effluent chemistry information. Some
data on fish tissue and sediment are also available.
DFS contains daily observations from U.S. Geological Survey
gaging stations, primarily of stream flow. It also includes
some water quality Parameters such as temperature, dissolved
oxygen, pH, and chloride.
The Fish Kill File tracks voluntarily reported fish kills due to
pollution from 1960 through 1990. Data includes location,
circumstances, total number of fish killed, and number of each
