Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN)Entry ID: MSU0008
Abstract: The Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) is used to
facilitate management and operations of the National Plant
Germplasm System (NPGS), and to enhance communication to
scientists regarding the location and characteristics of plant
material they may wish to obtain. Data collection began in
1898, and data currently describe all latitudes and longitudes
that support higher plant life.
... Collection Organization: Database Management Unit.
Collection Methodology: The NPGS is a network of organization
and people dedicated to preserving the genetic diversity of crop
plants. The national system collects plant germplasm from all
over the world, including the United States. Curators and other
scientists preserve, evaluate, and catalog this germplasm and
distribute it to people with a valid use. The data are from the
collection, maintainance evaluation, and distribution process.
Collection Frequency: Daily.
Update Characteristics: Not updated in its entirety.
Portions of the database are updated daily. It is a dynamic type
GRIN facilitates management and operation of the following ARS

National Animal Germplasm Program (NAGP)
National Microbial Germplasm Program (NMGP)
National Invertebrate Germplasm Program (NIGP)
443,000 accession records, 40 record types, 800 data fields, 1
gigabyte data, and 0.5 gigabyte of indexes.

Quality Data are reviewed and analyzed by subject matter specialists
before entry into the database. The initial source of data
accuracy and validity is the personnel at the germplasm site
entering the data.
