Relative Wilderness of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed
Entry ID: Relative_Wilderness_Chesapeake

Summary
Abstract: Relative wildness of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. A combination of
data representing the six attributes of the land that contribute to
its wildness. These attributes are solitude, remoteness, uncontrolled
process, natural composition, unaltered structure, and pollution. For
a full treatment of the wildness concept see "Indicators of Wildness:
Using Attributes of the Land to Assess the Context of ... View entire text

Quality Computing relative wildness involves assigning nominal (rank) values
to source data, then summing those ranks. We recognize that
mathematical summation is strictly not appropriate for nominal
data. We utilize this technique for lack of a reasonable
alternative. A review of conservation research literature shows that
this is a commonly used technique, so we are, at least, in good
company in our inappropriateness.
