Features mapped from two pan sharpened Quickbird images of eastern Heard IslandEntry ID: QUICKBIRD_HEARD_EAST_FEATURES
Abstract: Features mapped from two pan sharpened multi spectral satellite images of eastern Heard Island, from Shag Island to Compton Lagoon to Capsize Beach. The images were captured from Quickbird on 17 January 2003. The features include coastline, glaciers, lagoons, moraines, snow, vegetation, lakes and watercourses.
More information about the images used, the processing, and the feature mapping are documented in an image report available for download at the url given below.

Quality The majority, approximately 95%, of the mapping was performed using the Compton-Shag ortho-rectified image. The Capsize-Compton image was only used for the northern section of the mapping where required. Refer to the metadata records 'Quickbird Multi Spectral Image of eastern Heard Island' (ID - QUICKBIRD_CAPSIZE_COMPTON_ORPMS) and 'Quickbird Multi Spectral Image of the Heard Island Region' (ID - ... QUICKBIRD_COMPTON_SHAG_ORPMS) for metadata of the ortho-rectified imagery.
The image registration for the Compton-Shag image is better than for the Capsize-Compton image, as can be seen by the smaller RMS error, hence this image was used for mapping where possible. An automated feature extraction process was performed in ERDAS to automatically select and extract areas of vegetation and snow. These areas were then compared with the true colour image and the boundaries were manually adjusted where necessary. All other feature types were mapped in ESRI's ArcGIS by manually tracing along and around features using a stream digitising technique. The mapped data were converted to ArcInfo coverages. Coverage clean up and editing was performed using ArcEdit and ArcInfo. The coverages were built for lines and polygons. Attribute assignment and management was performed using ArcMap and conforms to the Feature Catalogue. The digitised data were mapped in UTM Zone 43 (WGS84) and converted to Geographicals on WGS84. The absolute accuracy of the referenced Quickbird imagery is +/-7.5m.
