Soil Survey Laboratory Characterization Database (SSLDB)Entry ID: USDA0223
Abstract: This is a nationally managed database of the Soil Survey
Laboratory (SSL), National Soil Survey Center, currently
containing analytical data for more than 20,000 pedons of U.S.
soils and about 1,100 pedons from other countries. Standard
morphological pedon descriptions are available for about 15,000
of these pedons. Partial data for pedons currently being
analyzed may be unavailable. Soil ... fertility measurements, such
as those made by Agricultural Experimental Stations, were not
Collection Organization: Members of the National Cooperative
Soil Survey program.
Collection Methodology: Most of the data were obtained over the
last 40 years. About 3/4 of the data are less than 20 years
old. Analytical data for most of the pedons are fairly
complete, according to the prevailing view of the research and
characterization needs when the pedon was sampled. Generally,
the types of analyses have increased over time.
Collection Frequency: Data are collected as needed, as part of
an ongoing National Cooperative Soil Survey (NCSS) program.
Update Characteristics: The types or amounts of data updated are
variable. In the update process, data may be added, or deleted
from the database.
For National Coverage: 200 to 250 MB. The database contains
from 250,000 to 275,000 logical records. A record consists of
an individual mapunit record.
Data Center: USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
Dissemination Media: Standard CD-ROM.
File Format: Fixed length, column positional, tab-delimited file
structure, with a two-record freeform header, in master and
state data sets, ASCII.
Access Instructions: Contact the data center.
