Dynamics and transport of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in Drake Passage (cDrake): measurements from moored instrumentation
Entry ID: 0635437

Summary
Abstract: This data set contains measurements collected in Drake Passage between November 2007 and December 2011 as part of the cDrake progam funded by the National Science Foundation. The quantities measured by the current-and-pressure-recording inverted echo sounders (CPIES) include bottom pressure, vertical acoustic travel time, near-bottom temperature and near-bottom currents. CPIES were deployed ... View entire text

Purpose: The goal of cDrake is to quantify the transport and understand the dynamic balances of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in Drake Passage.

MOORINGS Ancillary Description
Quality These are the highest quality versions of the data after the least amount of processing.

For the CPIES, the current meter temperature sensor is located inside the current meter head; thus it is not in direct contact with the surrounding water. The absolute temperature is not accurate, however the variability is excellent.

A few of the CPIES were moved downslope by the strong currents. Pressure and travel time records have been adjusted to remove introduced offsets. The header records in the data file contain a warning about this situation.

The short moorings consisted of Aanderaa RCM8 current meters with rotors and vanes. Rotor stalls are flagged in the data files with the value "1".
