Fossil plants collected from Triassic-Jurassic Rocks, Carapace Nunatak, Allan Hills Area Southern Victoria LandEntry ID: Taylor_PLR1142495c
Abstract: Fossil plants of Late Triassic and Early Jurassic age collected from the Allan Hills and Carapace Nunatak, southern Victoria Land. Fossils from Carapace include fossil conifers, some anatomically preserved. A new, floristically rich Late Triassic site was discovered in the Allan Hills. The flora here includes ferns and equisetophytes, but is dominated by seed plants, including true cycads, conifers, ginkgophytes, dominant corystosperms (Dicroidium leaves, Umkomasia seed-bearing structures and Pteruchus pollen organs), and the first example of the peltasperm foliage Lepidopteris from continental Antarctica.
Purpose: Fossil plants have been accessioned into the Paleobotanical Collections, Biodiversity Institute (BI), University of Kansas. All specimens have been databased. Databases will be back online within a year, as we are currently migrating the data from a Filemaker platform to a Specify platform in order to comply with the other Divisions in the BI.
