Abstract: During 2001 a native forest in the South of Argentina experienced the
massive flowering and death of the bamboo Chusquea culeou, a dominant
understory species. We proposed to assess the impact of this event on:
a) the environmental factors and b) the population dynamics of forest
vegetation. We recorded air and soil temperature, relative air
humidity and light intensity under two conditions: death and green
bamboo. We also registered the survivorship, growth and herbivory
rates on Nothofagus nervosa, a canopy dominant tree and Chusquea
culeou seedlings. We established 12 transects of 5 m (length) by 0.30
m (broad) and we recorded the basal cover of Chusquea culeou. This was
determined by the lineal interception technique (Greig-Smith 1983).
