Summary
Abstract: Forecast back-trajectories are computed using the Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HySPLIT) model from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Air Research Laboratory forced with Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) model data. A forecast back trajectory is initialized 3 days into the AMPS forecast at McMurdo Station and other select Antarctic Automatic Weather Station locations around the continent and computed backwards through the zero forecast hour.

Purpose: While this is not the first time HySPLIT back-trajectories have been computed in an Antarctic setting (Markle et al., 2012), most other studies have employed the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis dataset. Here, a forecast back trajectory is employed to study a variety of phenomena such as Extreme Wind Events (EWE). These forecast back-trajectories, in conjunction with other AMPS fields, are analyzed to determine where EWE parcels come from at different levels and what kinds of synoptic scenarios are favorable for the development of extreme winds.
