Abstract: Spatial Information Tutorial Environment (SITE)is an educational
resource developed as one of the Project ASSIST support
materials for teaching GIS in Higher Education.
The intention of SITE is to provide a single environment for GIS
education. The software has been developed with `flexibility'
and `accessability' as the primary considerations:
1. Accessability: The software has been designed by ... using GIS
capabilities that are well supported and in the public
domain. All the software that is required to run the tutorial
environment can be found on this server. It is suggested that
users load the GRASS GIS and acquaint themselves with it prior
to installing SITE. The software runs on a standard operating
system (Unix) that is readily available to most Higher
-Temporal: The software is higly modular, with GIS, interface
and data seperated, so that updates to any aspect of the
resource can be incorporated. The utility of the package should
not be reduced by changes to any single element.
-Spatial: Any GRASS location, or mapset will be detected so that
locally interesting data can be used in the tutorial.
-Educational: Teachers can modify or write shell scripts and
link them to the interface, include other GRASS routines, or
write new ones. This provides teachers with a `toolbox' from
which a single teaching environment can be created which suits
their own needs. At a user level the resource aims to allow
students to control their learning. Users navigate their way
through the tutorial which is heirarchically structured. By
being able to interact with spatial processes and test and view
the results of their actions students have an excellent
opportunity to gain understanding of the subject matter.
