Sumatra-Andaman Islands Earthquake - 2004
Entry ID: IRIS_9.0_EQ

Abstract: A magnitude 9.0 megathrust earthquake occurred on December 26, 2004 just off
the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake happened on the interface of
the India and Burma plates. Based on preliminary locations of larger
aftershocks, approximately 1200 kilometers of the plate boundary slipped as a
result of the earthquake. From the size of the earthquake it is likely that
average displacement on the fault plane was about 15 meters.

Images shown are of seismometer recordings, taken by IRIS GSN stations, of
ground motion during the Sumatran earthquake. There is a plot that shows the
accelerations observed at 3 different IRIS/IDA stations.
