Carbon and Nitrogen Dynamics Response to Grazing ManagementEntry ID: USDA0071
Abstract: Soil carbon and nitrogen parameters collected from soil samples
from shortgrass native range pastures grazed under four grazing
management schemes and replicate control areas (exclosures where
no grazing occurred, two stocking rates (light and heavy), and
two replications (pastures). Treatments have been imposed over
a 12-year period. Within each pasture, a 50 meter transect was
sampled (5 soil ... core sites). Samples were collected for 0 -
3.8, 3.8 - 7.6, 7.6 - 15.3, and 15.3 - 30.5 cm depths. The
collected data support research initiated in 1993 to assess the
impact of stocking rate and grazing management systems on carbon
and nitrogen balance and ecosystem sustainability. Soil
carbon and nitrogen dynamics will be assessed as will above and
below-ground biomass. Soil bulk density data was also
collected. A carbon and nitrogen budget of the ecosystem will

laboratory at the High Plains Grasslands Research Station.

No legal restrictions to access, however data are being
collected in cooperation with a Graduate Research Assistant (for
M.S. degree) and have not been used in publication yet. The
data are not available on-line.
