GRADES-IMAGE: Inverse Modelling of Antarctica and Global Eustasy
Entry ID: GB-NERC-BAS-PDC-00519

Abstract: GRADES will investigate the state and stability of the Antarctic ice sheet. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) may be unstable because its base lies on rock below sea level. Measurements from satellites show that there is currently a substantial imbalance in part of the WAIS, which is contributing significantly to sea-level rise. BAS and the University of Texas, supported by US logistics, have ... View entire text

Purpose: A key objective is to improve predictions of Antarctica's contribution to global mean sea level rise.

* Understand the role of ice sheet disintegration in global climate change
* Assess what is causing the current imbalance in the WAIS
* Search for evidence of previous periods of rapid ice loss in the WAIS
* Determine the contribution of the WAIS to future sea level change
