NOAA Shallow-Water Benthic Habitats: Insular PacificEntry ID: benthic_habitats
Abstract: These datasets represent benthic habitat maps for the nearshore waters of American-affiliated islands throughout the insular Pacific, including Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, CNMI, and Palau. NOAA produced these maps to support coral reef research and to enable development of products that support management needs and questions. Thirty-two distinct benthic habitat types (i.e., 4 major and 14 detailed geomorphological structure classes; 8 major and 3 detailed biological cover types) within 13 zones were digitally mapped in GIS (geographic information system) using heads-up visual interpretation of orthorectified satellite imagery. A slightly different, aggregated classification scheme is used in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI).
Purpose: PacIOOS provides timely, reliable, and accurate ocean information to support a safe, clean, productive ocean and resilient coastal zone in the U.S. Pacific Islands region.
