The object of the primer experiment was to transmit sound waves from
two 15-meter towers on the seafloor and receive the transmitted
signals at the opposite tower. By examination of the received signal
arrival times and amplitudes as a function of time defocusing, effects

The experiment was conducted on the New England Continental Shelf in
August 1996, 80 miles southeast of Montauk, Long Island, and 60 miles
south of Martha's Vineyard.
Oceanographic data to complement the sound propagation data was
collected by Oregon State University (Murray Levine). These data
include temperature, currents (rotary meters and ADCP), marine
meteorology (air temperature, air pressure, wind velocity, humidity,
insolation), and optical data (BIOPS package containing the following
instruments: PAR sensor, Lu683 sensor, fluorometer, transmissometer
and temperature sensor).
The overall objective of the Coastal Mixing and Optics (CMO) Program
was to determine how particles and optical properties respond to
physical forcing under various oceanic conditions on a broad
continental shelf off the east coast of the U.S.

the site include raw data and preliminary analyses which, pending
publication, are considered properietary by the program
participants. ... The availability of these data and analyses on the web
site does not imply permission for anyone outside the program to use
these data. Permission must be obtained from ONR and the individual
investigator before anyone uses these data for research purposes
outside the scope of the CMO program.
All data are preliminary and subject to change as a result of ongoing
processing and quality control.
