Directional Wave Spectra from Cromer and Flamborough Head, UK (1985-1987)Entry ID: BODC_WaveSpectra_CromerFlam
Abstract: The data set comprises time series of directional wave spectra from
moored, surface following buoys. The data were collected as part of an
off-shore wave climate study undertaken by the Institute of
Oceanographic Sciences Deacon Laboratory on behalf of the Department
of Energy of the UK. 17 months of data were collected at Flamborough
Head and 19 months at Cromer.
Measurements were made by means ... of Datawell Wavec buoys anchored by
elastic moorings and transmitted to a receiving station. A 30 minute
record, in 9 consecutive sections each of 200 seconds duration, was
taken every 1.5 hours using a sampling frequency of 1.28Hz, except
between 06 Jan 1985 and 13 May 1985 (Flamborough Head) when records
were taken every 3 hours.
The nine 200 second sections were spectrally analyzed separately at
the receiving station using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques
(bandwidth 0.005Hz), and any which failed the automatic quality
control checks made during their transmission and analysis were
discarded. The FFT series which passed the quality control checks were
then averaged to give a directional wave spectrum with a bandwidth of
0.01Hz which was recorded on digital magnetic tape cassettes.
The two Wavec buoys used in each data collection exercise were
calibrated both pre- and post-deployment either by Datawell or by
Hydraulics Research Limited, Wallingford, UK (who used a calibration
rig similar to that used by Datawell). In all cases, the sensors were
found to be accurate to within 0.5 per cent of their nominal response.
Directional characteristics of the wave field are expressed as the
co-spectra and auto-spectra between the heave, pitch and roll signals
registered by the buoy over periods of 30 minutes.
AVAILABILITY: Available from BODC on magnetic tape. There is one tape
for each site, complete with documentation, in the IOC standard format
GF3. Data are also available via ftp over Internet.
